Executive Coaching
“All coaching is, is taking a player where he can’t take himself.”
– Bill McCartney
Coaching is most effective when clients gain important insights about themselves and find immediate ways to put these insights into practice. My coaching focuses on both aspects.
We will start by understanding what you want, what you value, and what your goals are – because if we fail to engage your personal motivation, meaningful change is unlikely. We will also go through a discovery process to understand the needs of your organization: the goals of the business overall, what your stakeholders needs from you, and how others perceive you. We also use state-of-the-art assessment tools that generate powerful insights about what makes you tick.
By combining these perspectives, we will find growth paths that are both personally fulfilling and of real value to your organization. Working together, we will also identify any patterns of thought or behavior or blind spots that may be holding hold you back.
Team Development
“Senior team dynamics are the foundation of a company’s culture, and its success.”
– Prof. Chris Argyris
It’s easy for leadership teams to work well together when the teams are small, the problems are simple and the stakes are low. But that’s not today’s reality. Teams have become much larger and more diverse, and are frequently spread around the globe, making it much more difficult to build the trust and open communications that underpin effectiveness. And as the problems get more challenging, and the stakes and pressure increase, team dynamics typically deteriorate.
Here’s Rob being interviewed by Dr. Krister Lowe, host of the Team Coaching Zone Podcast. Listen to this 2-minute segment where Rob talks about his approach to Team Coaching.
My work with teams focuses on three core areas:
Foundational Skills:
Arming your team with three simple but powerful skills that will transform their level of trust, quality of dialogue, and their ability to wrestle effectively with complex problems.
We will start by understanding what you want, what you value, and what your goals are – because if we fail to engage your personal motivation, meaningful change is unlikely. We will also go through a discovery process to understand the needs of your organization: the goals of the business overall, what your stakeholders needs from you, and how others perceive you.
Facilitation:
Helping your team apply these skills to increasingly challenging topics and situations, guiding your team to master the art of Collective Thinking.
Embedding:
Ensuring that, at every stage, all team members fully understand the skills and are confident in using them on their own after we’re gone.
To get started, I offer several Team Development workshops:
Transforming Meetings (1 to 2 days)
Strategy Offsites & Team Retreats (1 to 2 days)
Team Transformation (5 days spread across 6 to 12 months)
“ In short, we focus on helping your team to work at peak effectiveness while tackling it’s most challenging issues.
Our aim is that everything we teach continues to be used long after we’re gone ”
Board Effectiveness
Too often Boards contribute less than their full potential. This is typically a result of weak Board dynamics: Some Boards are overly deferential to the Chairman; others are dominated by a small subset of Directors; still others fail to get the key issues on the table at all, and end up focusing exclusively on governance at the expense of strategy and other issues.
Few Boards have developed the skills that enable them to systematically and reliably access the very best thinking of each and every Board member on their important issues, and to ensure that this thinking is directed toward the right issues at the right time.
6:30 Partners works with Boards to help them develop these skills, which we call Collective Thinking.
Strategy Facilitation
Organizations are always more effective when they have a clear, coherent, and committed strategy.
We help clients to design and run a strategy development process that is both fast and effective. Having spent 12 years as a partner with Monitor Group, one of the world’s leading strategy consulting firms, Rob is deeply familiar with the potential for strategy processes to drag on, to yield uninspiring results, or to achieve weak or uneven levels of buy-in. Too often, strategic analysis leads to complexity and inaction.
Our approach is honed to lead directly to purposeful action. We help you to get clear on your key strategic choices, and to identify the most important information you need to make these choices with transparency and confidence. This process minimizes time and results in a shared, deep commitment to the strategy that is selected. The goal is always the same: Clarity of thought leading to clarity of action.
